Here are the sample images that appear in my May 1996 column.
Now, in order to show all of these images in one place, I cheated. What
you're looking at below is a JPEG file saved in Photoshop's high-quality
setting. Because this is a JPEG file, some minor compression artifacts may
have been introduced.
Also, because the image below is a 24-bit image, it does not show the problem
that arises when you use an adaptive palette on the Web. Specifically, the
adaptive palette sample below looks better than it should--in fact, it looks
the way it would in a multimedia authoring program. To see how the adaptive
palette sample would really look on a typical Web page, go to the page "Adaptive
