Cool Technologies

Cornell University's CU-SeeMe Site -- CU-SeeMe is videoconferencing software that works on Macs and Windows machines equipped with video- and audio-input hardware. It's free, it's fun, and it's very cool. Once you get CU-SeeMe, check out these sites: Børre Ludvigsen's site (a variety of videoconferencing experiments, including a remote-controlled video camera that uses Lego parts!); Michael Sattler's CU-SeeMe page (very good tutorial material; links to other sites); and John Lauer's CU-SeeMe Event Listing page (the closest thing CU-SeeMe has to TV Guide).

Apple's QuickDraw 3D site -- Apple's outstanding new 3-D imaging technology is going to have a huge impact on the Mac world.

Apple's QuickTime site - Apple's Web site for QuickTime and QuickTime VR.

Mac People

Marc Canter -- I first met this guy in 1985 or so, when he had a small company called MacroMind and an animation program called VideoWorks. (I also have my original beta copies of MusicWorks.) Anyway, he sold MacroMind (now Macromedia) and is now exploring the outer limits of art, music, technology, and coolness.

MacInTouch -- Ric Ford's MacInTouch column in MacWeek is one of the best sources for timely, detailed information on current versions, updates, system software problems, and more. His Web site contains additional information and is updated frequently. His page of Mac-related links is equally useful.

Guy Kawasaki -- The original evangelist and a former columnist for Macworld, now an Apple Fellow -- and quite a fellow he is.

David Ramsey -- A former Apple engineer and former MacWeek columnist, he now writes a cybercolumn.

Dave Winer -- One of the original Mac developers, now known as the creator of the Frontier scripting software and some outstanding 'net-related software -- all of it for Macs.

Mac Shareware/Freeware Sources

shareware.com -- Operated by c|net, this is a searchable site of software for the Mac and, um, other platforms. Very flashy; nice interface.

Dartmouth College's ftp site -- Dartmouth knows its Macs; it's been a particularly strong force in Macintosh networking. (I covered a Mac networking conference there back in the mid-80s.)
